A Simple Acne Skincare Routine: What You Actually Need to Get Started

If you have acne-prone skin, skincare can get complicated really quickly.

One person tells you to use salicylic acid. Someone else swears by benzoyl peroxide. Social media gives you six more products to try, and before you know it, your bathroom counter is covered in acne treatments and you have no idea what’s actually helping—or what’s making your skin angry.

As a licensed esthetician and RN, I’m a much bigger fan of starting simple, being consistent, and adjusting your routine based on how your skin responds.

Acne can have several contributing factors, including hormones, excess oil, clogged follicles and inflammation. There are also conditions that can look like acne but aren’t traditional acne at all.

So no, there isn’t one perfect routine for everyone.

But if you’re overwhelmed by all the choices and simply want a good place to start, here’s how I’d approach it.

First: Stop Trying to Do Everything at Once

When breakouts aren’t improving, it’s tempting to keep adding products.

An acne cleanser. A scrub. Salicylic acid. Benzoyl peroxide. Retinol. A drying spot treatment. Maybe an exfoliating mask for good measure.

But more aggressive doesn’t necessarily mean more effective.

Acne-prone skin still needs a healthy skin barrier. When you’re constantly stripping and exfoliating your skin, you may end up with redness, dryness, sensitivity, flaking and irritation on top of the breakouts you were trying to treat in the first place.

That’s why I prefer starting with a simple, coordinated routine rather than combining a bunch of random acne products and hoping for the best.

A Simple Place to Start: Circadia Acne Essentials

If you’re starting from scratch—or your current routine has become way too complicated—the Circadia Acne Essentials Kit is one acne-focused routine I like as a starting point.

Circadia is a professional skincare line I’ve personally used and liked, and I appreciate that the kit takes some of the guesswork out of building a routine. Instead of choosing several unrelated acne products on your own, you’re starting with products designed to work together as part of an acne-focused home-care regimen.

Consistency Matters More Than a 12-Step Routine

One of the biggest mistakes I see with skincare is constantly changing products.

Acne doesn’t typically change overnight, and switching routines every few days makes it incredibly difficult to tell what’s working.

Give your routine time. Introduce products as directed, pay attention to how your skin responds, and resist the urge to add every trending acne treatment you see online.

And please don’t forget the basics.

Gentle cleansing, appropriate treatment products, hydration and daily sunscreen may not sound exciting, but a consistent routine usually makes much more sense than attacking your skin with every active ingredient you can find.

A Few Extras I Like for Acne-Prone Skin

Your skincare routine should do most of the heavy lifting. You don’t need a collection of gadgets to have healthy skin.

That said, there are a few simple extras I like that can complement a good skincare routine.

A Few Extras That Can Support Your Routine

Your skincare products do most of the heavy lifting, but a few simple extras can help support an acne-conscious routine. These aren’t necessities, and they won’t replace an appropriate skincare plan, but they’re a few things I think are worth considering.

Silver-Infused Pillowcase

Your face spends hours against your pillow every night, so keeping that surface clean matters. I like the idea of a silver-infused pillowcase for its antimicrobial fabric technology—just remember that it’s a helpful hygiene upgrade, not an acne treatment on its own.

iRestore LED Face Mask

LED is one of the few skincare gadgets I think can actually earn its place in a routine. The iRestore mask combines different wavelengths of light, and I like it as an at-home option for supporting overall skin health and concerns such as breakouts, redness, and signs of aging.

Clean Towels XL

A simple way to make sure you’re drying your freshly cleansed face with something clean every single time. I especially like these for acne-prone skin because they eliminate the damp bathroom towel that gets reused over and over.
